Cliffe Football Club vs. Cross Keys (N) 3rd May 08

HT: 4-1
FT: 6-2 W
Cliffe FC win Harold Robinson Memorial Cup

Cliffe FC were on the road as they travelled to their first final to be played at Queensgate, the home ground of Brid’ Town. Cliffe faced Cross Keys, a team they have played away to in the league winning 2-1. This match pitted 1st against 3rd from ERCL Div. 5.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

Cliffe almost had the lead with their first chance but continued to create and soon had the lead after a counter attack lead to Tom Hogg opening the scoring for 1-0 to the new league champions. Keys created little whereas Cliffe created every time they went forward, with Kev Taylor and Dave Heron having the beating of the Keys defence, and a second followed after the ball managed to come off Dave Heron and into the net for 2-0 Cliffe. Hogg had his second, and Cliffe’s third, after scoring an opportunistic chance inside the area. Hogg completed a first half hat-trick with a nice finish from the left. Keys did make it 4-1 with a quick free-kick from just outside the box. 4-1 was the half-time score.

Cross Keys had a penalty awarded early in the second half but was emphatically denied by Cliffe ‘keeper, Ally Harris, tipping the ball round the post to his left. Keys did manage a second making it 4-2. Cliffe’s fifth came courtesy off an Alan Jackson boot from a corner kick making it 5-2. Cliffe brought on 16-year-old, Byron Summers, and he scored with his first touch putting Cliffe into a 6-2 lead. The final whistle blew and Cliffe run out 6-2 winners.

Cliffe Football Club vs. South Cave Res. (A) 29th Apr 08

HT: 2-2
FT: 5-4 W

Cliffe FC travelled to face South Cave Reserves on Tuesday evening (29th Apr) Cliffe sat top of the table and South Cave were 2nd and still had an outside chance at the title but, with a win Cliffe were crowned league champions.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

Cliffe began brightly and had Cave on the back foot and Cliffe had the ball in the net through Chris Walker but was deemed offside. Walker however, did have his goal after cutting in from the left and burying the ball in the goal for 1-nil to the away side. After some nice play between Cliffe forwards, Tom Hogg and Alan Jackson, the score read 2-nil when Hogg squared for Jackson to finish. Cave were given a life-line when a penalty was awarded, for hand-ball from Danny Fisher, it was put away for 2-1. A second Cave penalty soon followed when a bobbling ball in the box hit Andy Moughan on the arm and was deemed deliberate and the resulting penalty was scored for 2-2. 2-2 was the score at half-time.

Cliffe came out second half with a will to win and be crowned champions. The away side soon were ahead after some nice individual play from Jackson enabled him to craft a nice run and finish for 3-2. Time ticked on and the game only became more dramatic, with Cave grabbing a third equaliser. Time was running out and a draw would mean the league contest going down to the end of the season but Cliffe regained the lead through Kev Taylor and many would of thought 4-3 would have been the end of things. Cave however, popped up with a forth equaliser! The ninety minutes was up and the game was into injury time but the dramatics were not over and Cliffe got it back and Hogg scored a fifth for the away side. The final whistle blew and Cliffe won the game 5-4.

Cliffe Football Club vs. Haltemprice (a) 22nd April 08 + vs. Brandesburton IV (a) 26th Apr 08

Cliffe FC played on both Tuesday evening and Saturday in two fixtures in the East Riding County League Division 5.

22nd April
Cliffe Football Club vs. Haltemprice Rangers – East Riding County League Div. 5

HT: 3-0
FT: 9-4 W

Cliffe FC faced Haltemprice away from home on Tuesday night (22nd April) and after scoring eight goals in their previous game Cliffe continued in the same form scoring no less than 9 goals versus Haltemprice.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

The goals for Cliffe began when Kirkham scored from inside of the box, the lead was doubled when a great run and cross from Taylor was volleyed home by Horner, Kirkham almost had his second but his shot hit the bar. The score read 3-0 at half-time after B.Summers finished off a chance.
Cliffe did not want to concede an early goal after the interval, but that’s precisely what they did, when mis-communication lead to Haltemprice getting a goal in the first minute of the second half. The home side had another goal and they looked to draw level. The introduction of Hogg at half-time, who grabbed a hat-trick Saturday, had a run on the home ‘keeper but was felled and a penalty was awarded, which Birch scored from the resulting spot kick, 4-2. Hogg had his first of the game with a lob over the ‘keeper for 5-2 Cliffe. The home side did get another but Hogg’s second followed a few minutes after with another lob, this time from about 30 yards out, the away lead restored back to three, 6-3. Cliffe got another from Crowther followed by Hogg’s second hat-trick in as many games was complete when the ‘keeper was unable to stop a shot from the right and the away side went 8-3 up. Kirkham did get his second from a header making it 9-3 Cliffe. The home side got another goal but it came from the boot of an away player when Moughan put the ball into his own goal. The score finished 9-4 to Cliffe FC.

Cliffe Team:
A. Harris, K. Simpson (M.Birch), N. Summers, D. Evans, A. Moughan, S. Birch, A. Kirkham, N. Horner (Hogg), K. Taylor, B. Summers, D. Crowther

Cliffe Scorers:
Hogg (3), Kirkham (2), Horner, B.Summers, S.Birch (P), Crowther

26th April
Cliffe Football Club vs. Brandesburton IV – East Riding County League Div. 5

HT: 1-2
FT: 7-2 W

Cliffe FC travelled to face Brandesburton IV. Cliffe earlier on in the season had beaten Brandesburton 7-1 in the cup and 6-1 in the reverse league fixture – Cliffe captain, Scott Birch, bagging a hat-trick in both of these games.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

This game’s first half, however, did not seem to look like a similar result would be the outcome when Brandesburton took an early lead. Cliffe didn’t seem to be able to get out of the blocks and the home side won a free-kick and, combined with a deflected Cliffe header, extended the home lead to 2-nil. Cliffe still continued to create little but did manage a goal from Byron Summers. The half time score was 2-1 to the home side.

If Cliffe are going to win the league they needed to win this game and after Cliffe manager’s, Keith Tiplady, team talk the away side instantly began to play football that got them to the summit of the league. Cliffe drew level with a Scott Birch free-kick and after Kev Taylor was fouled in the area, after one of his many penetrating runs down the right wing, Birch got his second, from the spot, putting Cliffe into the lead. Summers got his second soon after and then Tom Hogg grabbed a goal to put Cliffe into a 5-2 lead. Chris Walker’s shot went in off the inside of the post for 6-2. Hogg was fouled and a second penalty for the away side was awarded. Birch stepped up again, for his hat-trick, but the ‘keeper denied him. Cliffe got a seventh and Birch got his third scoring inside the area in the last few minutes.
With his hat-trick Scott Birch has been able to score a “hat-trick of hat-tricks” against Brandesburton IV scoring a hat-trick in each of the three games Cliffe have played them this season.

Cliffe Team:
A. Harris, K. Simpson, M. Birch, D. Evans, A. Moughan, S. Birch, A. Kirkham (Fisher), K. Taylor, D. Heron (Walker), B. Summers (Horner), T. Hogg

Cliffe Scorers:
S. Birch (3), B. Summers (2), T. Hogg, C. Walker

Brandesburton suffer a Birch “Hat-Trick of Hat-Tricks”

Cliffe FC faced Brandesburton IV for the third time this season, having faced them at home in the Cup and League, and travelled to face them away from home.
In the previous two fixtures Cliffe FC Captain, Scott Birch, managed to grab a hat-trick in each of these games and this game was no different. With Scott Birch scoring a hat-trick against Brandesburton IV once again, even affording a missed penalty, with this he has achieved a “Hat-Trick of Hat-Tricks”

HT: 1-2
FT: 7-2 W

Cliffe’s other goals came from Tom Hogg, Chris Walker and a couple from Byron Summers.
