With a good turn-out of 20 players Cliffe FC started life as a football club with a friendly against Barlby on Sunday 5th August.
Cliffe began nervously and after David Evans got caught in possession play led to Andy Smith being put under pressure leading to a dubious penalty decision by the referee, resulting in Cliffe conceding their first ever goal. Barlby continued the half with lots of possession and pressure on Cliffe FC with Rob Woods having to clear once off the line and Cliffe goalkeeper, Ally Harris making a good save. When Cliffe FC had a dead ball Kev Simpson supplied high quality balls from the kicks. Danny Fisher made an impact after manager Keith Tiplady made a early change.
Cliffe came into the second half after manger Keith Tiplady made numerous changes resulting with a more solidified back four featuring Matthew Birch, Andy Moughan and Paul Fenton. The attack also improved on the first half display with Kev Simpson posing a threat with a good understanding with Danny Fisher. Cliffe Football Club would celebrate their first ever goal with Dave Heron having two bites of the cherry to finish off a chance to equalise for Cliffe. Ryan Tiplady was later brought on and made the Barlby keeper work with two free-kicks and a individual effort. Cliffe ensured that the Barlby defence were not left to rest with Steve Hullah have a few efforts at goal. Tom Hogg played well upfront, with Jamie Sedman providing good support, with Chris Walker also impressing. Scott Birch would be the first to lead a Cliffe FC team as their captain playing well in midfield.
The game ended in 1-1 draw.
