Could Cliffe FC build on their encouraging performance away to Eastrington against Selby RSSC?
Maybe not so.
The game began promisingly with Dave Heron and Tom Hogg looking sharp but the hosts, Selby RSSC soon took a hold of the game using their set-piece prowess, threatening the Cliffe defence. The enevitable happened from a set-piece, a corner lead to the first and only goal of the game when abysmal marking lead to a free header for the home opposition to head home after 15 minutes and Cliffe dropped behind once again as they have done in all their other pre-season fixtures.
Selby RSSC continued to look threatening from dead-balls and bossed a majority of the possession for the remainder of the half.
After the turn-around Cliffe escaped going behind further with ‘keeper Ally Harris being alert to the Selby RSSC attempts on goal. Selby RSSC could have cause for grievance with the referee’s leniency and could have had two penalties one which was in the first five minutes of play, when Rob Wood was adjudged to have won the ball in a tackle on the left side of the Cliffe penalty area.
Cliffe did manage their first proper attempt on target after near an hour and continued to worry the Selby RSSC clean-sheet and after the match the Cliffe manager Keith Tiplady was left scratching his head as to how Cliffe FC did not manage to score. With Chris Pearson on as a substitute he had two close range efforts saved and three seperate other Cliffe FC players spurning chances one by Ryan Tiplady, and the others by Chris Walker and Barry Summers.
The game finished 1-0 to Selby RSSC.
Cliffe FC will be wanting to get a win before the league begins, but with only two pre-season games remaining performances like this one I’m sure will not cut it in the forthcoming season.
