HT: 6-0
FT: 9-0 W
After losing last week Cliffe FC were back in action at home to Skirlaugh Reserves and hoped to get back to winning ways.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
The game began slowly and Cliffe settled the better and took the lead through, the returning, Chris Walker who cut-in from the left wing and hit a shot into the top corner for 1-nil Cliffe. The home side soon doubled their lead when, from a Kev Simpson corner, a David Evans header managed to cross the line with the Skirlaugh ‘keeper unable to keep it out. Evans’ goal was not his last site of goal, he did carve out a few chances taking on a string of defenders only to hit his shots wayward and wide of the goal. It was soon 3-nil to the home side with a pinpoint pass from the outside boot of Nathan Horner was then duly put into the top corner by Walker for his second of the game and his eleventh of the season. Skirlaugh did manage a few attacks that Cliffe ‘keeper, Ally Harris, dealt with. Kev Taylor added a controversial (and what can be described as a “ice-hockey” goal) forth for Cliffe and Skirlugh’s heads seem to drop. Andy Kirkham with a bullet header, again from a corner, made it 5-nil to the home side. Horner made it 6-nil before the break with a low diving header.
Cliffe FC manager, Keith Tiplady, sent out the same eleven for the second period and Walker continued to be a thorn in Skirlaugh’s side and was deemed to have been fouled and a penalty was given. Scott Birch stepped up and put the penalty away for Cliffe’s seventh and left the ‘keeper standing. Cliffe’s ‘keeper Harris and full-back Matthew Birch did well sweeping up any long balls that the away side played. Rune Eriksen managed to score when the visiting ‘keeper unable to deal with a cross dropped it at Eriksen’s feet for him to finish for 8-nil. Centre-half Andy Moughan took a knock to the ankle but was able to finish the match playing out of position as a forward. Taylor grabbed his second before the end to make it 9 for Cliffe. The final whistle blew and Cliffe FC get the three points.
With this win Cliffe FC move up to second two points behind Hedon Rangers Juniors who Cliffe play away to next week and with the win can go back to top of their table.
Many Thanks goes to Cliffe FC sponsors The Bread Bin and Pure-Silk and The New Inn for their hospitality.
