Cliffe Football Club vs. Eastrington (N) 22nd March 08

HT: 0-0
FT: 3-1 W

Arguably Cliffe FC’s most important game of their brief history, Cliffe faced Eastrington in the Semi-Final of the Harold Robinson Memorial Cup, taking place at a neutral venue in Holme upon Spalding Moor.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

Cliffe begun the livelier of the two teams with Dave Heron carving out a chance that narrowly went over the crossbar, Heron in creating this chance received a knock and had to be replaced by Chris Walker. This game did not escape the winds that battered much of the region and so Cliffe in the first half played against the wind, not for the first time this season. Eastrington managed some of their own pressure winning corners and calling Cliffe defenders into shot-blocking challenges. Cliffe’s Tom Hogg managed to create himself some half-chances before the half-time whistle blew at 0-0.

The first 10 minutes of the second half turned out to be the crucial for Cliffe as Scott Birch grabbed his 14th of the season with a speculative effort combined with the swirling wind found its way into the top corner of the net for 1-0 Cliffe. A few minutes later Cliffe doubled their lead with a goal from, substitute, Walker which was also his 14th of the season. 2-0. Eastrington got one back from a set piece headed in from 6 yards for 2-1 and Eastrington found themselves back into the game. Cliffe needed to score another to be sure and the goal of the game was scored with a superb individual effort from Hogg with a run from near the centre circle beating at least two defenders before putting the ball into the net, restoring Cliffe’s two goal cushion making the score 3-1. Eastrington seemed to switch to a more attacking formation as they chased a two goal deficit but were unable to create any clear chances. The final whistle blew and Cliffe FC go through to the Final.

This win takes Cliffe FC into a Final in their first season, the final is scheduled to be played on 3rd May at the ground of Bridlington Town. Many Thanks goes to Cliffe FC sponsors The Bread Bin and Pure-Silk.
