After a crucial Semi-Final win last week Cliffe FC moved priorities back to the league, they faced Horsea Town III at home.

Once again the weather left a lot to be desired for with a wind blowing across the Cliffe pitch. This was no excuse for how Cliffe began their performance as Hornsea had the better of the exchange for the first half-hour and a freak goal was duly scored by the away side for 1-nil. Cliffe began to go forward with more prowess, including nice overlaps from full-backs Matt Birch and Steve Hullah, and levelled things through Tom Hogg and then took a 2-1 lead with a goal from Baz Summers. Cliffe’s hard work in gaining the lead was wasted when the visitors equalised moments before the half-time whistle. 2-2 at the interval.
Cliffe went looking for the lead and it wasn’t going to come easy as the Hornsea ‘keeper put in a nice display, denying numerous Cliffe efforts on goal. Cliffe wingers Dave Heron and Kev Taylor had the beating of the Hornsea defence and it paid off for Taylor when he grabbed a goal for 3-2 to the home side. Heron continued with some great individual runs towards goal being denied by the away defence at the last. At 3-2 Cliffe, however, were not guaranteed the 3 points and Hornsea punished Cliffe with two successive goals to take a 4-3 lead with less than 15 minutes left. Cliffe substitute, Dave Evans, provided the forth equaliser. A point wasn’t good enough and a fifth Cliffe goal was needed and was provided by the man who scored the home side’s first. Hogg popped up again and bagged what would be the winner for Cliffe making the score 5-4. The final whistle blew and Cliffe managed to scrape a 5-4 win and all three points.
With Cliffe having to make up postponed fixtures and an entrance into another cup competition on Tuesday night, away to Market Weighton, the next month is almost an unbelievably busy April with upto 10 fixtures for Cliffe FC. Many Thanks goes to Cliffe FC sponsors The Bread Bin and Pure-Silk.
