Cliffe Football Club vs. Tate & Lyle FC (H) 16th August 08

HT: 1-0
FT: 2-0 W

Cliffe FC entertained another Selby club at Cliffe Park, they faced Tate & Lyle. This was the first of two friendlies to take place at Cliffe as the second team kicked off straight after this match concluded.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

Both teams began brightly with Cliffe getting the first attempt at goal. The home side began to create down the flanks and the T&L full-backs were beginning to struggle to contain Kev Taylor and Dave Heron. The game began to become more physical and both sides began to concede more and more free-kicks, soon a free-kick was conceded by T&L on the edge of the area, after Ian Beckram was felled. This set-piece resulted in Luke Crowther heading the floated ball into the back of the net for 1-nil. The away side never seem to be a threat on the Cliffe goal but managed a chance after taking a quick free-kick that home side ‘keeper, Ally Harris, dealt with easily.

After half-time Cliffe began to gain a strangle-hold on the game and doubled their lead when Craig Allen beat the offside trap to slot the ball home for 2-nil Cliffe. For the final twenty minutes the away side began to create more going forward and Cliffe had to call on Harris to make two great saves from point-blank range. Any other T&L attacks were snuffed out by the Cliffe centre-half pairing of Andy Moughan and Scott Birch. With the final whistle Cliffe were confirmed 2-0 winners.

With this win Cliffe FC achieved their first clean sheet since December last year and are starting to gain a lot of momentum for the coming season that begins proper in September.
