Cliffe FC’s First XI were on their travels for the first time this season as they went to face Hornsea Town Reserves in ERCL Division Three.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Cliffe’s preparations were hampered by their arrival ten minutes before the 2 o’clock kick-off. They managed a short warm up but once the game kicked off, by the way Cliffe began the game, you could tell the short preperation time was hindering them. The game was pretty even between the two sides and the game could only be described as “scrappy.” Cliffe took the lead from a long-throw from the right, from Luke Crowther, for Ben Rawson to get his first competitive goal for Cliffe. The game remained “scrappy” until half-time with Cliffe 1-nil ahead.
Cliffe were told show that they can play football and were sent out in the second half to put the game to bed by, Manager, Keith Tiplady and, Head Coach, Bob Wilkinson. Cliffe responded to this and began to play better football and doubled their lead from a corner, Dave Heron scoring Cliffe’s second. Ian Beckram and Andy Addison continued to battle hard in the middle of midfield with centre-half pairing Scott Birch and Andy Moughan dealing well with any Hornsea threats thus leaving Cliffe ‘keeper, Ally Harris, a virtual spectator. Cliffe made changes meaning Crowther moved up-front and with this he found acres of space to easily slot home for the away side’s third. Byron Summers grabbed Cliffe’s forth scoring just inside the area, his forth in two games. Crowther popped up again to score the fifth, nicely driving the ball home.
Ultimately, Cliffe’s superior fitness enabled them to extend the scoreline by three goals towards the end of the match. This 5-nil win also means Cliffe have now kept two clean sheets in-a-row, which hasn’t been done in the club’s short history. Also on Saturday, Cliffe FC (2nd XI) suffered a 4-3 loss at the hands of Hornsea’s 3rd XI in the Harold Robinson Cup, meaning Cliffe bow out of the cup they won last year at the first hurdle.
