Both Cliffe FC teams were in league action this week. The first team travelled to face Molescroft Rangers in ERCL Division 3 whilst the Cliffe FC 2nd XI entertained Withernsea III at Cliffe Park in ERCL Division 5.

Second XI Result
The second team lost 4 goals to 2 against Withernsea III, a disappointing result for the second XI.

Cliffe started brightly without creating any clear cut goalscoring chances. Cliffe broke the deadlock when a Ian Beckram cross was met by Tom Hogg for 1-nil. Tom Hogg was involved in the making of Cliffe’s second when his shot was handled off the line by a defender. This defender was sent-off and Scott Birch doubled the away side’s lead by scoring the resulting penalty. With an extra man on the field Cliffe with their momentum should of gone on to seal the game within the first half. But Cliffe seemed to take their foot off the pedal and Molescroft raised their game and scored two goals in five minutes to make the score 2-2 at half-time.

Cliffe manager, Keith Tiplady, gave his second half instructions and sent his players out to regain the lead and win the game. A elegantly placed lob from Ben Rawson made it 3-2 to the away side and Hogg made Rawson’s second, Cliffe’s forth and re-established the two goal cushion. Hogg grabbed his second by emphatically smashing the ball home to make it 5-2 and late-on a through ball was converted into his own net by a Molescroft player, under the pressure of Paul Fenton, to make the final score 6-2 to Cliffe.

Is there such a thing as “too many leaves” on a football pitch?
