East Riding County Qualifying Country Cup (1st Round)
Cliffe’s 2nd XI came from behind twice in this game to eventually run out comfortable winners and gain an easy passage into the second round.
Gary Wilson writes…
Cliffe started this game on top and could easily have been two ahead within the first 10 minutes if the chances they created had been taken. Instead, Brandesburton broke down the left and the attacker was upended by Matt Birch just inside the box for a penalty which was duly converted to give Brandesburton the lead.
Cliffe responded within minutes when good work down the right allowed Byron Summers to equalise.
Mid-way through the half Brandesburton again scored against the run of play when a goal mouth scramble was eventually put away by the Brandesburton forward.
Cliffe showed great resilience to battle back and deservedly equalised when Craig Allen scored the first of his 3 goals. Cliffe then took the lead shortly afterwards when Aaron Lees scored from the left side to take Cliffe into the break a goal ahead.
After the break solid defensive work from Mark Buck and Andy Moughan allowed the midfield to run amok and two quick-fire goals from Kev Taylor were soon followed by Allen completing his hat-trick with a couple of well taken goals.
By this time the home team were being run ragged and never really looked like scoring again as Cliffe had chance after chance, eventually leading to goals by Byron Summers and Marcus Ford to leave Cliffe winning this tie with a deserved scoreline of 9-2.
