After Cliffe FC’s 1st XI suffered defeat in the cup last weekend they returned to league action versus Market Weighton at Cliffe Park.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Cliffe started brightly but couldn’t make the break-through early on. Eventually Cliffe broke the deadlock with full-back, Kev Simpson, scoring from outside the box. Another went in for Cliffe, Ben Rawson scoring inside the box this time for 2-nil Cliffe. A break-away from Market Weighton saw them score making it 2-1. Cliffe restored the two-goal cushion, Ian Beckram scoring directly from a freekick. Beckram would go onto make Cliffe’s forth, taking on the Weighton defence before setting up Rawson for his second. The relentless Cliffe onslaught saw Cliffe score a fifth and sixth before half-time. Andy Kirkham getting a shiner of a fifth and Tom Hogg drilling a sixth into the bottom corner. 6-1 to Cliffe at half-time.
Cliffe didn’t want to settle on this and wanted to go after double-figure-goals that has, so far, eluded the club. Dave Heron continued to be denied a goal whilst, fellow winger, Shane Cawkill and Heron continued to cause problems for the Weighton defence. Cliffe centre-halfs, Luke Crowther and Scott Birch, had little to do and, ‘keeper, Ally Harris was a virtual spectator. Rawson’s hat-trick goal eluded him but his presence forced an own goal for Cliffe’s seventh. Weighton did make it 7-2, but after Simpson’s fantastic deliveries continued from the right, Hogg had his second, a rare header, for 8-2. Substitute, Adam McMahon, scored a simple tap-in for Cliffe’s ninth. Another Simpson cross created another, now not so rare, Hogg header to break the double figures barrier for Cliffe and supply Hogg with his hat-trick. The scoring was not over when Kirkham grabbed his second to make it 11-2 at full-time.
Cliffe finally have broke the double-figure number of goals in one match after it has eluded them on occasions where they should have had 10 or more goals. Saturday was a great day for Cliffe, with the second XI winning 9-2 in the East Riding County Qualifying Country Cup 1st round away to Brandesburton IV.
