FT: 8-0 W
Cliffe Football Club’s first team got their season under-way, after a week’s delay, they entertained Patrington Stanley at Cliffe Park.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
The away side fielded what can only be described as depleted squad, but Cliffe were given instructions to not feel sorry for them and go out and play as they would in any match. To be fair to the away side they had the first chance of the game when they nearly got through on goal. This was the closest they got in the first half as Cliffe started to take control and opened the scoring with a goal, made by right-back Luke Crowther, for Byron Summers. After some penetrating runs down both wings from Kev Taylor and Dave Heron, the lead was doubled by Ian Beckram’s fired shot. Left-back Paul Fenton, on his full debut, scored Cliffe’s third. Andy Kirkham scored Cliffe’s forth and Summers grabbed his second, and Cliffe’s fifth, shortly before half-time.
Patrington still maintained a good spirit and continued to compete in the second half. A fired shot from the boot of Crowther made it 6-nil and he nearly got another that hit the inside of the post. The home side continued to have shot-after-shot and either the ‘keeper made a great save or the chance was wasted. Patrington managed to win a couple of corners in succession which called Cliffe ‘keeper, Ally Harris, into action to make a good save. The away side couldn’t contain the Cliffe wing-play and soon Beckram had another after beating two men to score for 7-nil. Soon Summers had his third by rounding the ‘keeper one-on-one and tapping the ball in for Cliffe’s eighth and celebrated duly with his trademark “Summers-sault.” With a short cameo from Manager, Keith Tiplady, the game finished 8-nil to Cliffe.
In the unique circumstances, Cliffe will be happy with this win to get the season up and running and next week travel to face Hornsea Town Reserves.
