FT: 1-3 L
Cliffe Football Club began their pre-season preparations with a re-arranged fixture at home to Riccall United. With a 2-o’clock kick-off and the sun beaming down onto the Cliffe pitch, conditions were energy-sapping and the weather would play a part in this match with Cliffe FC fielding a squad including a few débutantes.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
The game began pretty even with both teams having their fair share of possession. Riccall had the better chances of the first quarter of the game and one of these chances paid dividends when they took the lead with a shot that went over the head of Cliffe ‘keeper, Ally Harris, and clipped the inside of the post as the ball found it’s way into the back of the net for 1-nil to Riccall. With rolling subs active Cliffe manager, Keith Tiplady, was able to try different player combinations. One forced Cliffe sub had to be made when Tom Hogg picked up a knock. Riccall doubled their lead before half-time.
The sun continued to create hot, humid conditions as the second half began. Possession continued to be shared but Riccall seemed to be able to be more efficient with theirs. Cliffe continued to compete with Riccall and at times some may of thought this match was a competitive match as opposed to a friendly. Cliffe managed to score their first goal of this season when a through ball from Nathan Horner was finished off with a lob over the ‘keeper’s challenge by Byron Summers for 1-2. Riccall however finished the game off with a late goal for 3-1 to the visitors at the final whistle.
