FT: 3-2 W
Cliffe Football Club only had one fixture this week and it belonged to the second team as the first team’s Thursday evening fixture was cancelled.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Cliffe entertained Selby Railway’s reserve team at Cliffe Park. The away side had the better of the early exchange and Cliffe were on the back-foot. Cliffe, however, took the lead against the run of play when Steve Hullah played a cross-field ball for Tom Lonsdale to finish off for 1-nil to the home side. Cliffe doubled the lead with a great individual effort from Rich Taylor after a great turn and finish. Again, Railway got back into the game and then equalised, scoring from a rebound after a freekick was parried by Cliffe ‘keeper, Mark Brown. 2-2 was the score at half-time.
Cliffe came out the brighter side second half with Craig Allen and Andy Kirkham dictating play. Railway had a few half-chances which centre-half’s Matt Birch and Marcus Ford dealt with. Going forward Cliffe looked good with right-back Kev Simpson looking comfortable. Kirkham was the player that put Cliffe back into the lead in the last twenty minutes after a quick freekick from Simpson played to Kirkham on the edge of the box was driven into the net for 3-2 to the home side. This was not the end of the action as a high-footed from a Taylor challenge caused a confrontation between some of the two sides’ players which the referee had to deal with. This was the last of the action and the final whistle confirmed Cliffe 3-2 winners.
