FT: 4-2 W
Cliffe FC went into their second pre-season game this time versus Kartiers FC.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Katiers fielded a mixed squad of player featuring a both trialists and yet-to-be featured first team players. Cliffe also featured mixed personnel. The visitors took the lead before Cliffe hit back through Ben Rawson. Kartiers were awarded a penalty before half-time after a Scott Birch felled an opposing player. Kartiers went into half-time 2-1 ahead.
The game continued in its competitive spirit in the second half and a great 30-yard strike from Nathan Horner’s boot found its way into the top corner to level scores. A number of Cliffe player performed well including Beckram and Buck and, after a hernia scare, an appearance for Kev Taylor. The game could of gone either way at two-a-piece but in the final minutes it went the way of Cliffe when Matt Birch tapped in a chance for 3-2. Cliffe sealed the win when Craig Allen was felled in the area and got up to score the penalty. 4-2 final score.
Both team’s game plan had to be changed at short notice when the match official ruled against ‘rolling subs.’ This affected Cliffe in the fact that they were unable to bring Nathan Summers back onto the pitch as he continues to work hard on his fitness. The game’s spirit continued into the pub well after the full time whistle.
Some say Cliffe FC treated the result like a ‘cup final’ but, considering this was the club’s first victory both in a pre-season fixture and over a fellow Selby club, and none other than Kartiers, grouped with the on-going hard work at training Cliffe are encouraged with progress so far.
