FT: 3-1 W
Cliffe FC travelled to face Market Weighton in their first mid-week game, of which their April is littered with mid-week encounters, in the first round of the H.E Dean Cup. They had previously beat Weighton this season also at their ground in a different cup winning 2-1.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
As Cliffe did the last time they played this team they managed to put through their own net, with the same player, Dave Evans putting the ball past his own ‘keeper, Ally Harris, after a throw-in was not dealt with and deflected off Evans for 1-nil to the home team.
Cliffe were the better side by-far but their task was soon made that little bit harder after, in the space of 5 minutes, Cliffe captain Scott Birch lost his head, was booked twice and sent-off. Cliffe now had to play two-thirds of the game with a man less than Weighton. Cliffe didn’t let this affect them and soon Dave Heron was felled in the area and a spot-kick was given. Alan Jackson, who was on his début, stepped up but the ‘keeper managed to save to his right and Cliffe remained 1-nil down. Cliffe continued to work some nice moves and a throw-in from the right, played into the box by Evans, was finished nicely by Jackson for the away side to draw level before half-time.
Cliffe came out the second half to put the game beyond Weighton and soon had a 2-1 lead with a fantastic goal from Heron after cutting in from the left wing and curling the ball into net. Cliffe forwards, Tom Hogg and Jackson had the beating of the home defence and 2-1 was soon 3-1 when Jackson doubled his tally, again a nice finish. Cliffe manager, Keith Tiplady, did not change his formation whilst making personnel changes and wanted his team to extend their lead. Cliffe looked like they could score everytime they came forward but could not extend their lead, with other débutant Richard Sowden bossing the middle of midfeild. When the home side did come forward it was easily snubbed out by Matt Birch, Kev Simpson or Evans, respectively. If the home side did get past the defensive line, Cliffe ‘keeper, Harris dealt well with any shots or loose ball. The ever-present Kev Taylor also had the beating of the Weighton fullbacks and supplied some nice crosses. The final whistle blew and Cliffe had won the game 3-1 with 10 men from being 1-nil down.
This was one of Cliffe’s best wins considering the circumstances but the next round of this Cup will be a much bigger test for Cliffe, as they face AFC Charter, a team sitting pretty near the summit of the Premier Division, a full five divisions above Cliffe. This game will take place at Cliffe Tuesday 8th April with the K.O at 6.15pm. Many Thanks goes to Cliffe FC sponsors The Bread Bin and Pure-Silk.
