Cliffe FC played this pre-season friendly against Wheldrake at a neutral venue due to standing water at Cliffe’s home ground.

Cliffe started brightly with the Cliffe midfield dictating play and they scored first after Ben Rawson grabbed a birthday goal for 1-nil Cliffe. The game looked pretty even before the half-time whistle blew.

Cliffe wanted to put this game to bed early in the second half but that was not to be when a missed header let the Wheldrake attack in to score an equaliser for 1-all. Cliffe began to dictate play once again and it paid off when Ian Beckram smashed to ball into the net through a crowd of players for 2-1. Tom Hogg hammered a Cliffe third and Cliffe’s fitness started to show. Scoring his first for the club, Andy Moughan, grabbed Cliffe’s forth goal from a corner-kick and celebrated with delight. Cliffe used two ‘keepers in this match with Ally Harris and Gary Wilson doing well. Another notable performance was that of James Topping. Beckram topped off a strong performance by bending in a Cliffe fifth and a fine set-piece resulted in Luke Crowther scoring a sixth. A second from Hogg and a goal from Dave Heron meant Cliffe ran out 8-1 winners.

The scoreline is a bit unfair to Wheldrake as they managed to keep Cliffe at bay for 70 minutes before the superior fitness shone through. The Wheldrake ‘keeper deserves a mention as he managed to save possibly ten or more chances to keep the deficit to seven.

Cliffe FC first team manager, Keith Tiplady, said “I was pleased to see some of the training paying off tonight and really pleased to see the players thinking the game through. Wheldrake battled gamely for 70 minutes before our fitness helped us overcome them with five late goals. I am looking forward to the new season more and more, just looking for one or two more to commit to Cliffe FC before the big kick off”
