A gritty second-half comeback from Cliffe 2nd XI saw them secure their 4th win in a row against a strong Hedon side.

The first 20 minutes of this game saw Cliffe under sustained pressure as Hedon seemed to be able to break through the Cliffe defence at will, but fortunately for the hosts a combination of woodwork, goalkeeper saves and just plain poor finishing meant that the storm was weathered without a goal being conceded.

The few chances Cliffe did create were on the break, with the Hedon defence not able to handle the pace of Luke Worrillow. Following a rare Cliffe corner the ball fell to Luke Worrillow who showed great skill to flick the ball in at the near post.

Cliffe grimly held on to their lead as again Hedon kept pressing forward and eventually they scored when a break down the right was crossed for a forward to slot the ball home.

Almost immediately after the break Cliffe were behind as a Hedon shot from 20 yards was unluckily deflected into the goal. The Cliffe side were at a low ebb at this point and Hedon had numerous chances to extend their lead but did not take them.

Then came the turning point in the game as Cliffe were awarded a free-kick on the right side. Aaron Lees floated over a lovely cross towards the back post which was met by Jamie Hawksworth who headed solidly into the net for the equaliser.

This seemed to re-awaken the Cliffe side who began to play with a new-found confidence. Tom Hogg broke down the right and crossed for Luke Worrillow to bag his second. Shortly afterwards Tom Hogg added his name to the score sheet as he showed good strength to shake off a defender and fire home.

Hedon once again rallied, but the Cliffe defence held firm for a victory which once again moves them further up the table. Nathan Summers was the referee’s man of the match.
