Cliffe entered this local derby needing a victory to keep their hopes of promotion alive and ended the game winning in a canter

“Lose or draw this game & our season is over” was the rallying call of manager Dan Harper as Cliffe travelled to Gilberdyke to play a side in top form, having beaten the league leaders the week before.
The game didn’t start well as Cliffe soon went a goal behind following a deflected shot. Kicking into the wind didn’t help either as Gilberdyke’s many corners were swinging in on the wind, making defending them difficult. However, Cliffe’s defence weathered the storm with Matt Birch outstanding at the back.
As the half progressed, Cliffe began to get the hang of playing the ball on the ground with Captain Nelly Lambert and Craig Allen making many runs into Gilberdyke territory. Cliffe equalised following good work on the right which allowed Luke Worrillow to dribble past a defender and slot the ball past the keeper.
Just before half time Cliffe took the lead when a Ryan Tiplady free-kick was headed on by Nathan Summers to Nelly Lambert, who finished with a delicate lob over the keeper.
Cliffe had the wind at their backs in the second half and soon increased their advantage with the goal of the game. A half-clearance from a corner fell to Craig Allen who volleyed the ball into the top corner from 20 yards.
Shortly afterwards a far-post cross from Craig Allen was headed home by Aaron Tiplady.
Cliffe were now in top gear and a flowing move down the right allowed Nelly Lambert to bag his second of the match.
During the last ten minutes of the match Cliffe seemed to lose concentration a little and this allowed Gilberdyke a late consolation goal with a fierce shot from 15 yards.
The 5-2 scoreline marked Cliffe’s 7th league victory in a row, and they must continue this form into the last two league games to keep their promotion hopes alive.
