Malcolm Bryce writes…

Cliffe began brightly and looked good coming forward with Tom Hogg causing many problems to the Newbald defenders and together with strike partner, Baz Summers, the Newbald defence was far from comfortable. It would be Hogg who would supply the superb ball from the left for Kev Taylor to half-volley home to put Cliffe into the lead. Ian Beckram in the middle of the Cliffe midfield look a threat to the Newbald defence everytime he had the ball and with that Cliffe went into half time 1-0 up.
The second half saw Newbald actually venture into Cliffe’s half and with this the home side began to apply pressure on the Cliffe defence. Craig Allen continued to work hard in the Cliffe midfield and Summers combined with Hogg always looked to unsettle the Newbald defenders. Cliffe centre-halves, Andy Moughan and, Captain, Scott Birch began to have more to deal with and Cliffe ‘keeper, Carl Blundell, had to pull off two fantastic saves to keep his team in front. Whilst this was Cliffe FC’s second win in four days the overall performances are not looking at their best and a distinct lack of goals is a cause for concern. Without man-of-the-match Carl Blundell’s saves this game could have been more of a task than the Cliffe team already made of it on the night. On the plus side, full-back, Jamie Hawksworth and, midfielder, Craig Allen put in two great individual performances.
Cliffe FC entertain Skirlaugh at Cliffe Park on Saturday afternoon and a performance is needed from Cliffe to win the 3 points.
