Cliffe FC vs Gilberdyke 7Apr09

Cliffe began well and opened scoring within the first 20 minutes when Byron Summers put Dave Heron through for Heron to finish nicely and put Cliffe into a 1-nil lead. The lead could have been doubled when, after some great movement, Andy Moughan found himself with a free header from a corner but put it wide and the score remained the same. It would be Summers’ perseverance that would see him make the away side’s second goal when he chased down the ball to square it for make-shift forward Shane Cawkill to score, a day after his birthday, to put Cliffe into a 2-nil lead. Gilberdyke had the chance before half-time to get back into the game when Cliffe Captain, Scott Birch, handled the ball inside the box. The Gilberdyke #14 sent the ball wide of Carl Blundell’s left hand side post and the score remained 2-nil to Cliffe at half-time.

Cliffe had a 3-nil lead early into the second half when Scott Birch found himself inside the Gilberdyke box when his first touch set him up to smash the ball into the net. With Andy’s Addison and Kirkham getting the better of the centre-midfield and wingers Heron and Kev Taylor causing problems each time they came forward the feeling was that Cliffe would get another. Cliffe had a forth when Cawkill squared for substitute Ben Rawson to put into the net for 4-nil to the away side. With a cameo from Craig Allen and Mark Buck, Rawson putting the ball into the net two more times only to be ruled offside and Moughan coming close with another header Cliffe were confirmed 4-0 winners at full-time.

This was a great overall performance from the whole Cliffe team on the night including full-backs David Evans and Jamie Hawksworth, who I have yet to mentioned, played their part in Cliffe’s clean-sheet also.

This win means Cliffe now play hosts to another 1st Division side in the shape of North Cave Reserves in the next round of the H.E Dean Cup.

Cliffe do not have a fixture this Saturday so the next fixture Cliffe play will be the 3rd round of the H.E Dean Cup when North Cave Reserves travel to Cliffe Park, Oxen Lane on Tuesday 14th April for a 6pm kick-off.
