In arguably Cliffe FC’s most important game of the season, Total Sign Solutions travelled to face Cliffe in a 2nd vs. 3rd fixture.
Cliffe FC handed out a 5-2 defeat to Total Signs and with the win sees Cliffe FC seal promotion from the East Riding County League division 3, and with this keep alive the possibility of the league title
Malcolm Bryce writes…

The Cliffe players from the moment they arrived at Oxen Lane knew the significance of the game, a loss would put all promotion hopes in jeopardy. With game-faces on Cliffe began brightly and took it straight to Signs. With this Cliffe took the lead within the first 20 minutes when the returning Shane Cawkill smashed the ball past the Signs ‘keeper to put the home side 1-nil up. Signs looked bright coming forward but many attack was broken down by Andy Addison and Cliffe’s forward play filtered threw both Addison and Craig Allen in the centre of midfield. Cliffe’s lead doubled when, during his first appearance of the season, Alan Jackson put the ball into the net for 2-nil. Allen and Scott Birch also came close during the half for Cliffe, and the score read 2-0 Cliffe at half-time.
The second half would see five goals scored and Cliffe got the first of the half when Jackson set Baz Summers up to score, his first since early March, to put Cliffe 3-nil ahead. Summers had his second, and Cliffe’s forth, which he celebrated with delight. With a 4-0 lead, Cliffe looked as if they rested on their laurels and looked comfortable, but Signs then scored two quick goals in succession, the second a long-range lob over Ally Harris, to make the score 4-2 with over 15 minutes left and in all honesty a few, including Manager Keith Tiplady, must of felt slightly anxious of a Signs comeback. This was not to be as Cliffe once again took control of the game and looked likely to score more and, make-shift forward, Kev Simpson broke through on goal to score the final goal of the game to seal a 5-2 win for Cliffe FC.
This win see Cliffe FC seal promotion from the ERCL Division Three and keeps their title hopes alive. Ironically the team Cliffe beat, Total Signs play league leaders Hedon Rangers Reserves on Tuesday evening, and Cliffe will want Signs to take points off Hedon and a win for Signs will put things back into Cliffe FC’s hands.
