Cliffe FC travelled to face St Clements where they played out a pre-season friendly in the York Racecourse ground where Cliffe FC ran out 5-2 winners.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

Cliffe FC vs St Clements 15Aug09

Cliffe begun very brightly and had an early lead when Tom Hogg broke through to score his first chance of the game for 1-nil to the away side. Cliffe looked to push on but when a poor set-piece allowed St Clements to equalise before half-time Cliffe had to take a hard look at themselves.

In the second half, Cliffe did respond, in the most spectacular way when right-back Tom Dunning fired the ball into the opposite top corner, off the post, into the net from all of 40 yards to put Cliffe 2-1 ahead. St Clements did still however equalise when a penalty was awarded and converted. It would take another special effort, this time from Andy Kirkham, who bagged from 30 yards out for 3-2. Cliffe pushed on from there and scored a forth through Hogg’s second and Hogg would set Kev Taylor up to round up the 5-2 Cliffe win.

Keith Tiplady said

“Tom Dunnings goal. Forget the venue and opponents that was one of the most spectacular goals I have ever seen!”
