Cliffe FC’s reserves travelled to face Barlby Sunday Side for a Thursday evening friendly and together with a mature performance ran out 5-2 winners and the away side could of easily won by a bigger margin.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Cliffe began well and had a lead when Ian Beckram was put through to finish for 1-nil Cliffe. It was 2-nil when Beckram displayed a bit of class to rally many tackles to smash the ball into the net. Johnny Wileman soon extended Cliffe’s lead to 3-nil when he burst into the box to slot the ball under the Barlby ‘keeper. Nelly Lambert made it four with a header in the last action of the half.
The second half saw Cliffe the better team and played some nice football and stuck to their task of winning the game but Barlby grabbed a goal to make it 4-1. Towards the end of the game, Cliffe could have had many more goals when Tom Ellwood, Nelly Lambert and Richard Milner squandered chances. It would be Lambert who would score the goal of the game when he scored a goal from outside of the box that went in off the underside of the bar to make it 5-1. Barlby managed another goal past stand-in ‘keeper, Shane Cawkill, to make it 5-2 final score. Other notable, mature performances came from Aaron Lees, Matt Birch and Nathan Horner.
Cliffe squad:
Cawkill, Leach, Hallam, Birch, Buck, Beckram, Lambert, Wileman, Milner, Lees, Horner, Ford, Jevons, Ellwood
Cliffe scorers:
Beckram (2), Lambert (2), Wileman
