Cliffe FC faced a second top Goole team in a week, when they faced Viking Raiders on Wednesday evening at the neutral venue of Thorpe. Once again it would be a story of the Goole side scoring twice and Cliffe ruing missed chances.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

Cliffe FC vs Viking Raiders 22Aug09

It would be Vikings that had the best of the first twenty minutes and the lead when Matt Walker (a Cliffe FC Sunday player) opened scoring for Vikings and before Cliffe knew it (another Cliffe Sunday player) Ash Lattimore, would double Vikings lead and Cliffe had it all to do. They did respond and with the vocals from forward, Tom Hogg, Cliffe developed some fight and began to compete with the ERCL Premier Division side. It was 2-1 before half-time when Scott Birch managed to bundle to ball into the goal left-footed and halved the deficit.

Cliffe came out second half chasing the game and always looked like they could score but Vikings counter-attack was always a threat. Cliffe pushed and Tom Hogg had a few chances before his chance lead to Ben Rawson scoring inside the six yard box to level things and it looked as Cliffe could go win this game. Once again Billy Atton and Andy Addison competed well in the middle of midfield and the ball spent a lot of time in the attacking third for Cliffe. Vikings came close when a individual run from Ash Lattimore saw him hit the inside of the post and Cliffe had a freekick and last minute corner before the score was confirmed at 2-2 by the final whistle.
