Cliffe entertained Barmby Moor in Division 3 of the York and District league in a howling gale at Cliffe Park and were once again, mostly, below par.
Keith Tiplady writes…
The opening moments were quiet as you would expect from two sides meeting for the first time with a sense of “testing” about each others play. It was the visitors who first linked up neatly in attack and when Evans was unable to clear the resulting cross to anyone other than a waiting striker on the penalty spot, he finished with ease. With only five minutes on the clock things didn’t look good. Things almost became much worse shortly afterwards when a puzzling penalty decision was given against Lees. The resulting spot kick was sent wide and Cliffe breathed a sigh of relief.
The remainder of the first half was poor fair really from the hosts with countless missed tackles, mis-hit passes and a string of bad decisions by players at key times resulted in very little positive play. Hogg twice striking the woodwork was more or less against the run of play and in truth it could have been a lot worse than 1-0 at half time.
The second half started slowly too and it was difficult to see where an equaliser was going to come from, the cross field wind continued to hamper play and made conditions difficult for both sets of players.
Finally in a pretty too-and-fro game Cliffe did equalise through a great solo goal from Hogg. Moment later and with only ten minutes remaining substitute Rawson turned and fired home from 12 yards with virtually his first touch of the game.
The visitors tried in vain to get back into the game and in the effort to chase a game they could have wrapped up by half time, got caught out time and time again, Cliffe guilty of wasting a whole raft of chances in the dying moments before the game was finally lit up with a mazy 20 yard slalom from Addison, riding 4 challenges before neatly rounding the keeper to finally kill off poor Barmby. The referee didn’t even have time to restart the game, blowing the final whistle as the players regrouped.
