A brace for Tom Hogg and a first Cliffe goal for Aaron Lees at Oxen Lane saw Cliffe FC through to the second round of the East Riding County Junior Country Cup.

Cliffe FC vs Spiders 10Oct09
David Evans

Cliffe had the better of the first 15 minutes and looked good coming forward and dealt with what Spiders threw at them. Unfortunately after 10 minutes Cliffe lost Tom Dunning, once again to injury and Nelly Lambert had to come on to replace him. The deadlock was broken when an Aaron Lees “pile-driver” was too much for Spiders’ keeper and put Cliffe 1-0 ahead and Lees duly celebrated with his “Frank The Tank” celebration for the first time at Oxen Lane. It would remain 1-nil at half-time.

Cliffe performance was continued to be encouraging in the second half with Billy Atton and Andy Addison looking a more than good enough match for the Spiders central midfield. With Tom Hogg and Lees being a nuisance up-front another goal came when Hogg headed a cross in from a yard out to make it 2-0 Cliffe. Spiders did score when Andy Kirkham was penalised in the area and the resulting penalty was scored to Ally Harris’ right. 2-1 became 3-1 when after some great perseverance from David Evans, Hogg found himself bearing down on goal for him to score his third goal in two games for Cliffe. Spiders scored again and made it a tense last 15 minutes at 3-2 to Cliffe. Hogg had a pair of chances to grab his hat-trick, as did Sim Leach during his cameo role, in the last 10 minutes as Cliffe saw out the encouraging victory.
