It was a matter of Melbourne stealing a point and Cliffe FC dropping two in one of the most one-sided games ever to take place at Oxen Lane.
Malcolm Bryce writes…

Cliffe FC vs Melbourne 31Oct09

From the first whistle Cliffe were the better team, dominating in possession with Melbourne rarely venturing near Ally Harris’ goal. Tom Hogg’s presence was felt up front for the hosts and both Johnny Wileman and Nobby Taylor looking dangerous down the wings. A Nobby Taylor cross-shot would find its way into the path of Tom Hogg to smash into the net to put Cliffe ahead. Cliffe pushed on from there and narrowly missed a set of chances and of course it would be an away side goal that would follow when a long-throw lead to Melbourne equalising before half-time. Cliffe did manage to hit the bar before half-time but it remained 1-1.

The second half did not go to plan when somehow Melbourne managed to score going 2-1 ahead. Cliffe went back to pegging the away side back and with a combination of hitting the post three times, hitting the bar again, having the ball cleared off the line by ex-Cliffe player, Andy Smith, multiple times Cliffe had the ball in the net twice…Only to have both disallowed. It would take a second Hogg goal to equalise with little time left on the clock leaving Cliffe to try to sought out a third and winning goal. The last kick of the game saw Mark Buck sweetly volley the ball only for the ‘keeper to make his only competent save of the game.

Cliffe Team:
