Cliffe travelled to Bridlington on Saturday to face the Driffield Premier Division leaders Bridlington Excelsior, in the County Cup, on the back of some frankly terrible results and without several key players.
Jimmy Sommerville writes…
The game hadn’t even kicked off and Cliffe were a man down as Aaron Tiplady fell foul of a hairdressing appointment!
With the pack reshuffled Cliffe took to the field and looked lively from the off with Neil Taylor and Shane Cawkill both pulling shots wide early on when clean through. The hosts made it clear that they were looking for a win too when first of all they caught Cliffe on the break and fired wide, then took the lead on 5 minutes with tremendous pace on the break. A good spell followed for the hosts and Cliffe looked to be on the ropes until an inch perfect Scott Birch free kick was headed home by Tom Hogg. Moments later Cliffe lead as Kev Taylor won the ball having chased and won a lost cause before squaring for Neil Taylor to smash home from 8 yards.
Now the visitors really fancied it and Tom Hogg pressed and harried the back four, great link up play from Billy Atton, Cawkill, Kev and Neil Taylor (no relation) provided chance after chance. In recent weeks Cliffe have missed these types of opportunities but not today, Hogg taking full advantage firing 3 quick fire goals to propel Cliffe into a 5-1 half time lead!
After the restart the same pacey striker for Bridlington scored again to give them a glimmer of hope but this was quelled when Hogg fired home his fifth. Tiplady finally arriving with his perfectly quaffered friends was introduced and made an immediate impact heading home a Kev Taylor corner. Scott Birch got on the score sheet with a close range pile-driver and there was even time for Mike Fisher to have a penalty saved!
The final score was 8-2 to Cliffe and it was smiles all round as at last all the hard work of recent weeks was rewarded. Now this has to be taken forward into the league starting next Saturday at Melbourne.

T. Hogg (5), N. Taylor, A. Tiplady, S. Birch
