Cliffe Reserves made the long trip to the East coast and ensured a safe passage into the next round of the County Cup..
Gary Wilson writes…
Cliffe started the game well, asserting their superiority early on, and other than a 5 minute period late in the first half, never looked like being anything other than comfortable winners.
Hornsea struggled to get the ball out of their own half for the first 20 minutes, with Cliffe creating many chances, Baz Summers going close to scoring on a couple of occasions.
Cliffe took the lead when good interplay down the left by Nathan Summers and Nathan Horner allowed Joe White to get clear of the defence and finish neatly.
Despite further chances, Cliffe were unable to increase their lead before the break. Against the run of play, Hornsea equalised when, following a free-kick, they hit the cross-bar twice in quick succession before finally being allowed to poke the ball home.
Following a stern talking to from manager Dan Harper, Cliffe started the second half strongly and were soon rewarded when Baz Summers fired in a low shot from the edge of the box to take the lead.
Mid-way through the half a Nathan Summers header rebounded off the cross-bar, only to be turned into his own net by an unlucky Hornsea defender.
Despite a few Hornsea forays into Cliffe territory, the Cliffe defence held firm, with Parish and Buck outstanding at the back.
With 5 minutes to go mano-of-the-match Joe white produced the ‘champagne moment’ of the match when he fired in a shot from fully 35 yards which went over the keeper before dipping below the bar and into the net.
A resounding victory which advances Cliffe into the next round of the County Cup and also provides confidence for the return to league fixtures in the coming weeks.
