Cliffe Reserves were bustled out of the East Riding County FA cup at the Quarter Final stage by a strong Union Rovers side.
Gary Wilson writes…
Cliffe started this game well, having the lion’s share of possession for the first 15 minutes or so, without creating any clear chances. Aaron Lees then had to leave the field with an injured ankle following a clash with the home goalkeeper. The only chance of note for either side during the first half came on 35 minutes when Nelly Lambert unleashed a thunderous free-kick which was tipped around the bar by the keeper.
The home side are challenging for the Beckett League title, and their confidence began to show as they took a hold of this match early in the second half. They started to create more chances, with Cliffe surviving due to the poor finishing of the home side. However, the deadlock was broken when the home centre forward was allowed space on the left and he slotted home for the only goal of the game.
Cliffe rallied towards the end of the game, with Craig Allen proving a handful for the home team to handle, often resorting to fouls as the best way to stop him. From one of the subsequent free-kicks Allen himself nearly scored when his shot was deflected past the post by a home defender. This was the only real chance Cliffe could create during the second half, and the game ended the cup run for Cliffe who have now just got their 4 remaining league games to concentrate on, as promotion is still a possibility.
