Cliffe FC managed to power through to the Semi-Final of the League Cup with a win over, a higher division team, FC Ridings.
FT: 2-1 W
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Cliffe played the first half with their backs to the sun and settled well before a great through ball from Kev Taylor enabled Ben Rawson to score for 1-nil to the home side. Shortly after the goal, as Cliffe pushed for another, they suffered a set-back when Ian Beckram had to leave the field due to injury. The match quickly became very scrappy from both teams and the physicality escalated in the game without any card been dished-out by the referee. Cliffe’s wing play was their biggest threat with fullback/winger combinations of both Kev Simpson with Shane Cawkill down the right, together with Dave Heron and Kev Taylor on the left worrying the Ridings’ defence numerous times. Half-time arrived with Cliffe ahead.
The second half seemed more even between the teams and centre-backs Scott Birch and Andy Moughan had to mop things up at the back for Cliffe a few times. Cliffe striker, Baz Summers, became increasingly frustrated at his crafted chances not coming off and strike-partner Rawson continued to put a bag-load of effort in. With the introduction of Tom Hogg the Ridings defence would rue this fact as Hogg’s left boot would see Cliffe into a 2-nil lead. Ridings were not completely out of the tie as they managed to score making it 2-1 and made for an anxious close to the game. Cliffe continued to creat until the end with central midfielder pair, Craig Allen and birthday boy Andy Kirkham having chances on goal. With a set of Ridings corners having to be dealt with by the Cliffe defence and ‘keeper, Ally Harris, been drawn into action Cliffe saw out the 2-1 win and progress into the semi-final.
Cliffe FC head coach, Bob Wilkinson, said “We consolidated our hard work at training sessions today with a display of effective individual, unit and team play resulting in a very deserved win. It’s pleasing to see training time work on a match day”
