FT: 1-0 W
Cliffe FC’s 1st Team finally had a league fixture after weeks of postponements and they travelled to face Market Weighton, a team put 11 past in the reverse fixture earlier this season. This games scoreline would, however, not be as high as that.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Cliffe FC started brightly and found themselves in front of the Weighton goal more often than not, Dave Heron and Shane Cawkill causing problems down the wings. A Cliffe goal would follow a set-piece after a freekick into the box from the left saw a scramble in the box involving Ian Beckram and Andy Moughan led to the ball breaking outside the area for Andy Addison to fire the ball at goal whilst Beckram redirected the ball into the net by flicking it off the heel of his boot, which of course he meant, for 1-nil Cliffe FC. Cliffe had a goal disallowed when Beckram floated the ball into the net, but Ben Rawson was adjudged offside. A Luke Crowther freekick outside the box was bravely blocked by a player in the wall using his face to block the shot. 1-nil was the half-time score.
Cliffe came out the second half and dominated the game, with ‘keeper Ally Harris a virtual spectator. Rawson had his chances saved by the Weighton ‘keeper, to add to Rawson’s frustration. Cliffe continued to have shots on goal without scoring. Cliffe centre-halves Moughan and Scott Birch has little to do and substitute left-back, Layton Hallam came close with a long range effort. Cliffe also created from Crowther long throws but still didn’t manage another goal. The introduction of Luke Worrillow saw Cliffe have the ball in the net but was also ruled offside.
Cliffe came away with the three points with a very comfortable 1-0 win but have managed to slip to third in the league a point behind and with a game in hand over the top two teams.
