FT: 0-2 L
Another lack-lustre performance saw Cliffe FC’s first team draw a blank at home for the first time in recent memory and bombed out of the York FA Junior Cup at the first hurdle to Strensall
Malcolm Bryce writes…
This Strensall side was the same side which Cliffe drew 3-3 with on the opening day of the season and a much improved performance from Cliffe compared to that game was needed.
Tom Lonsdale crafted a half-chance for Tom Hogg within the first two minutes and within the first five minutes it was Strensall that took the lead with a strange own-goal and Cliffe knew, with 85 minutes to go, not to panic. Cliffe’s job was made ever harder when a 30 yard effort from Strensall found its way into the top corner to put the away side 2-0 up. This remained the score at half-time.
The Cliffe performance narrowly improved and it was still the case that nothing was sticking up top and both Hogg and Ben Rawson were struggling to affect the game. Cliffe wingers Lonsdale and Andy Kirkham also struggled to change the game in Cliffe’s favour and Lonsdale had to leave the field after picking up a knock. Substitutes Dan Fisher, Tom Dunning and Aaron Lees all made appearances and Lees had a half-chance when the ‘keeper dropped the ball at his feet but the angle was too narrow to score. The full-time whistle arrived and disappointingly Cliffe FC are knocked out in the first round of the cup, to last years losing finalists.
Next weekend both Cliffe FC Saturday teams are in action; First team are at home to Barmby Moor and the Reserves travel to St Clements. Cliffe FC Sunday Side are at home to Ainsty Panthers on Sunday morning.

Cliffe FC 2ndXI Summary:
Cliffe FC’s Reserves travelled to face Poppleton Reserves, also in the first round of this cup and after being 2-0 at half-time a good team performance showed by winning the second half 2-1. Unfortunately the goals from Layton Hallam and Richard Milner were not enough and the final score read 3-2 to Poppleton
