Cliffe FC showed character with a dramatic “to-and-fro” match which saw York Civil Service equalise twice but see Cliffe take all three points in a 4-3 away win.
Dave Clifton writes…

Andy Addison celebrates his fantastic goal.
Cliffe FC started well and created quite a few chances and after 25 minutes Ben Rawson opened the scoring, dedicating his goal to a family friend who recently passed away. Cliffe doubled their lead 10 minutes before half-time when Paul Fenton beat the Civil Service ‘keeper unfortunately Cliffe had to make an early change due to Kevin Simpson damaging his thigh before the break which saw Cliffe lead be deserved 2-0 score-line.
Civil Service, only 3 points behind Cliffe before this match, came out to possibly prove why they scraped a 3-2 win in the reverse fixture earlier this season and the home side worked a goal to make it 2-1 and had the clock ticking. Cliffe continued to pose a threat to the Civil Service goal and a a restoration of the two goal cushion was needed. The home side fans seemed to had picked Cliffe ‘keeper, Ally Harris, as a target of their ‘affection’ and unfortunately a misjudged shot found it’s way past Harris to see Civil Service draw level. The York side sounded confident, with even one of their defenders telling me I would be writing about a 3-2 win for them in this match report.
Cliffe sub, Aaron Tiplady, nearly scored with his first touch and forced a corner and a fifth goal arrived in the game with about 10 minutes left when a corner ball broke to the edge of the box for Andy Addison to emphatically strike the ball straight into the top corner giving the ‘keeper no chance to be celebrated with delight from all the Cliffe players. This still wasn’t the end of the scoring when Civil Service equalised for the second time making it 3-3 as they celebrated in a similar fashion. When Cliffe were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the area, a goal was needed. Cliffe captain, Scott Birch delivered when even the ‘keeper getting a touch couldn’t stop the ball going in off the bar to win the game. Civil Service finished the game with 10 men after a second bookable offence and 4-3 was the final score with Cliffe FC taking all three points and staying in contention for the league title.
This was a great game for the absent neutral and with all the banter directed at Cliffe ‘keeper, Ally Harris, seems he got the last laugh on the day. Cliffe FC travel to face Selby Olympia next Saturday and Cliffe Reserves play host to York Civil Service’s Reserves.
Cliffe Scorers:
Rawson, Fenton, Addison, Birch
