A gritty local derby was played out at Cliffe Park, with the visitors coming out on top
Gary Wilson writes…
Hemingbrough Utd started the game well, putting early pressure on the Cliffe defence, which held out until mid-way through the first half when Mike Brown ran down the right and crossed for Ricki Hutton to score at the near post. Before half-time the lead was doubled when a Mike Brown through-ball put in Jonny Falkingham who scored with a cross-goal shot.
HT: 0-2
Stern words from Cliffe FC manager Dan Harper, coupled with the introduction of Nelly Lambert seemed to galvanise the Cliffe team, and the roles were reversed with Cliffe having much the better of the game in the second half. Cliffe enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and many chances were created without them being converted. With 15 minutes to go a Nathan Horner free-kick was met by a fine Joe White header and Cliffe were back in the game.
Cliffe continued to press for the equaliser and, almost inevitably, Hemingbrough scored the winner in the last minute when Jonny Falkingham broke down the left and crossed for Ricki Hutton to score.
The sides meet in the league once again next week when Cliffe will be hoping to reverse the result.
