In a game which saw Cliffe FC first team concede the most goals in one match, Heslington score six to see Cliffe FC crash out of the ERCFA Junior Country Cup at the third hurdle
Dave Clifton writes…

Cliffe FC vs Heslington 13Feb10
Tom Hogg’s header almost beats the Heslington ‘keeper

The game began in awful circumstances when within 12 minutes Cliffe FC were 3-0 down after a Rory Delap-esque thrown-in made it 1, defensive mix-up made it two and another set-piece made it three. A life-line was given to Cliffe when Neil Taylor scored before half time with Andy Addison, Aaron Tiplady and Kev Taylor also coming close.

The Cliffe second-half performance started very well and soon 1-3 was 2-3 after a penalty was awarded which David Evans converted and it looked as the away side may be able to turn things around, with a double substitution Cliffe it was game on until Heslington capitalised on another defensive error to make it 4-2. Heslington’s goal of the day was they’re fifth goal which was half-volleyed from at least 35 yards into the bottom corner and with that Cliffe conceded another as they chased the game and the final score saw Heslington progress 6-2 winners.

From a neutral point-of-view this game wasn’t completely deserving of a 6-2 win for Heslington as Cliffe had three chances saved brilliantly by the ‘keeper and another cleared off the line and the game could of easily finished 7-6.

Cliffe FC’s first team priorities return to league competition when they play hosts to third placed Crayke. Cliffe FC Reserves travel all the way to Hemingbrough to try make up for the 3-1 loss at Oxen Lane suffered in the previous fixture.

Cliffe FC 2ndXI Summary:

Cliffe FC Reserves played hosts to Hemingbrough Reserves in a local derby with three points at stake. With Joe White grabbing Cliffe’s only goal, Hemingbrough win the bragging rights. But with all to play for when the fixture is reversed next weekend.
