FT: 5-0 W
In a venue switch Cliffe FC gave up home advantage and travelled to face Selby Olympia in league competition that would see a hat-trick, two poached goals and Cliffe go to the top of the table.
Dave Clifton writes…
In dark and gloomy conditions the opening of the game was even between the teams but as expected the side rooted to the bottom of the table went behind when a corner from Cliffe broke down and Andy Addison was there to smash the ball through the crowd and past the ‘keeper for 1-0 Cliffe. Addison made it 2-0 Cliffe when he headed the ball in from low into the bottom corner. The Olympia ‘keeper seemed to save everything Aaron Tiplady fired at him.
The second half saw Cliffe go 3-0 ahead and Addison had his hat-trick goal when a nice exchange between him and Kev Taylor lead to him smashing the ball low into the net. Three became four when Kev Taylor played the ball past the ‘keeper and Ben Rawson was there to poke the ball home on the line, which Taylor claimed and celebrated. Cliffe’s final and fifth goal came when Billy Atton charged into the box and unselfishly passed the ball for Rawson to get his second from a yard out.
These three points for Cliffe sees them go top of the table with Strensall a point behind. The game played out very different to how you would expect a top vs. bottom match, with Olympia competing well and, if it were not for Cliffe ‘keeper Ally Harris, should have had at least two goals.
Next Saturday sees Cliffe FC first team in County Cup competition away to Heslington and Cliffe Reserves face Hemingbrough Reserves.
