FT: 4-1 W
Cliffe FC began their York League Division Three campaign with a 4-1 win away to a stubborn Stillington side
Hugo Delgado writes…
With Cliffe’s squad containing no less than six new signings making their competitive débuts for the club it took a good 15 minutes to start breaking down a very robust and stubborn Stillington side. An early shout for a penalty was waved away as Andy Addison was brought down in the area but the away side kept the pressure on and after some nice link-up-play Addison was felled again in the area, this time the penalty was awarded. Luke Crowther smashed the spot-kick into the net to put Cliffe 1-0 up on the half-hour mark. Defender Kev Simpson came close a couple of times to scoring but it didn’t seem his day in front of goal. Cliffe doubled their lead before half-time when Ben Rawson neatly poked the ball into the bottom corner for 2-0.
Cliffe came out second half to further their lead to avoid any contentious refereeing decisions to let the home side back into the game. Andy Kirkham and Billy Atton began to dominate the right wing for Cliffe, as did Kev Simpson and Shane Cawkill on the left. Cliffe made it 3-0 when Chris Jackson neatly headed the ball into the net from a Sean Bugg corner, scoring past the same ‘keeper on the same ground to when he scored his first Cliffe goal. The first contender for Cliffe’s September goal-of-the-month was scored to make it 4-0 when Shane Cawkill netted the ball into the top corner from outside the area and the three points were coming back with the away side. The home side managed a consolation goal to ruin a clean-sheet for stand-in Cliffe ‘keeper Dave Lyon on his first official outing for Cliffe after signing twice this season. Things took an inconvenient turn for the away side as opening scorer Crowther had to leave the field with an ankle injury meaning Cliffe finished the game with 10 men (like last season) having used all their subs, Cliffe also were temporarily down to nine-men when Bugg had to have treatment after jarring his knee after a clumsy challenge. Each player from the Cliffe bench had a good cameo for their respective débuts from Shaun Smith, Steve Smith and Mark Bennett. Cliffe had time to still apply the pressure, with only 10-men, and after multiple mazy runs from Atton and a unique way of asking for the ball from Rawson by Addison Cliffe won the game 4-1.
Saturday 18th September 2010 was a special day at Cliffe Football Club as to go with the 4-1 first team win, Cliffe FC Reserves won 6-0 with goals from Luke Rayner, Paul Fenton, Richard Milner and a hat-trick from John Knowles but Cliffe FC Juniors won all their games to create a clean sweep for the club as the U11 won 2-1, U12s won 3-2 and the U14s won 9-0!
