FT: 4-1 W
Cliffe FC faced Wheldrake for the second time in just over a month and like the Selby Cup final, Cliffe FC came back from 1-0 down to win the game.
Hugo Delgado writes…
Things did not go to plan for the home side when Wheldrake scored from their first attack of the game making it 1-0. It took a good 10 minutes before Cliffe began to gain a foothold on the game, and after a textbook Luke Crowther free-kick slammed into the wall, Kevin Simpson’s free-kick shortly after went straight into the top corner for 1-1 and his first since the home side never looked back and began to peg Wheldrake back. The away side always had their long-ball game to test Cliffe’s defence as they did in the Selby Cup final back in August. Ben Rawson hit the post from a Tom Hogg cross and the home side’s pressure paid off and Hogg scored a delightful goal from outside the box to make it 2-1 and it was 3-1 before half-time after a nice cross from Kev Taylor was neatly controlled and poked into the net by Andy Kirkham for his first goal of the season. Rawson had the ball in the net from a Hogg cross but was whistled offside leaving Cliffe 3-1 at half-time.
Cliffe wanted to put the game to bed in the second half but the physical nature of the game continued and Shaun Smith combined with Andy Addison gave as good as they got in the heart of Cliffe’s midfield. It would be a Taylor corner that would see Scott Birch head onto Billy Atton to put Cliffe into a 4-1 lead after Atton’s flick header. Hogg continued to be the thorn in Wheldrake’s side, battering them down both sides and through the middle and always looked a threat. Shane Cawkill came close with his shot shaving the outside of the post as did Kev Taylor but the final score was 4-1 to Cliffe FC.
Cliffe FC now look towards next Saturday’s ERCFA County Cup ties against Hemingbrough United and Shiptonthorpe United respectively.
