The first half was pretty even but with Cliffe having more efforts on goal, mainly from the boots of Shane Cawkill. Cawkill came the closest to scoring when his long range effort had to be tipped over for a corner as he remained the biggest thorn in Strensall’s side for the first half. Due to the condition of the Strensall Barracks pitch, long ball became the theme of the game during the first half as both side’s midfields were being bypassed. Goalless at the break.

With Cliffe wanting three points to win the league, you could sense slight nervousness from some of the Cliffe contingent on- and off-the-field. With Strensall getting leapfrogged into 2nd-placed Tadcaster Magnets via a 2-0 loss on Monday night, they were not going to let their own promotion hopes slip signalled by the bolstered squad they fielded compared to last week’s encounter at Oxen Lane. A few notable moments developed as the match went on; Subsitute Sim Leach being hacked down and getting into a scuffle to place himself close to his first career yellow card and Darren Jackson’s memorable Steven Taylor-esque handball into the face! Cliffe were thankful to Ally Harris when he made a terrific save from a great effort which Harris tipped over the bar. But still, the home side were the ones to break the dead-lock when from a counter attack when Strensall broke down the right wing and with an untracked man ghosting in at the back post to smash the ball past Ally Harris, Strensall went 1-0 up. It was 1-0 for less than five minutes when Nathan Horner nodded the ball on for Ben Rawson to neatly poke the ball home to equalise for Cliffe to the delight of the Cliffe contingent and the dismay of the Strensall spectators.
