FT: 2-0 W
Cliffe FC continued their rich vein of pre-season form as a second-half brace of Chris Jackson penalties saw off Wakefield League side, Innter Crown, 2-0 to lift the B & P Sports Selby Cup 2011.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
An end-to-end first half which both teams looked like scoring and an early penalty shout was waved away as a pin-point long ball was chased down by Chris Jackson and it looked like Chris had been fouled as he bared down on goal. Stand-in Cliffe FC ‘keeper, Paul Tanton, on his less than ideal first Cliffe start, had little to do as Luke Crowther and Dale Huntington nullified any Crown attack that looked like threatening their clean sheet. A strange day for weather saw the rain come crashing down as the first half ended goalless.
Every single player in a Cliffe shirt continued to work hard and this perseverance saw the awarding of the first penalty, just after the hour mark, as Tom Hogg was tripped in the area. Chris Jackson stepped put Cliffe ahead with a less than emphatic spot-kick. (which Chris would make up for in the second penalty.)
With Keith Tiplady in Las Vegas, stand-in player/manager Alan Jackson made changes and nearly had a goal himself as a header was cleared off the line. It would be Chris Jackson again that would have heavy involvement as he won a second Cliffe penalty, being taken out on the edge of the six-yard box. Chris dusted himself off and smashed the penalty home to put the game to bed, 2-0. Cliffe saw out the remaining quarter-of-an-hour to collect their well deserved Selby Cup 2011 Winners medals after a competitive match against a decent Innter Crown side.
