Cliffe FC vs. Rufforth United 12Mar11

Cliffe, by their own standards, struggled to get out of first gear through-out Saturday’s game and it took over 20 minutes to open scoring when Andy Addison fired through the crowd to nestle the ball in the bottom corner to make it only 1-0 before the break.

Second-half, Cliffe remained the better team but failed to extend their lead as each of Chris Jackson’s efforts were foiled by the Rufforth ‘keeper and fast became one of his most frustrating days of his Cliffe career. Cliffe got a lot of joy down both wings via wingers, Ian Beckram and Kev Taylor but it was Chris Jackson that crossed from the right wing for brother Alan Jackson to score with his third touch, a header, to double Cliffe’s lead just after the hour mark. Cliffe had three goals when Billy Atton won a free-kick outside the box and Richard Gladwell scored directly from the resulting set-piece, grabbing his first for the club from his trusty left foot (with both Will Ramsay and Alan Jackson claiming final touches on Gladwell’s free-kick.) A cross from the right wing saw Kev Simpson assist Beckram to neatly finish to make it 4-nil, scoring his first goal since coming back from injury and put the result beyond doubt. 4-0 full time.

Cliffe were possibly guilty of wasting their chances to extend the score-line but Cliffe ‘keeper, Micky Caglar, performed well in goal having being called up on at short notice to the first team and kept his second clean sheet of the season, having played once in goal for Cliffe Reserves earlier this season. Cliffe FC Man Of The Match was Willy Ramsay.

With F1 Racing drawing with Fulford, and Elvington losing to Osbaldwick this result sees Cliffe FC go four points clear at the top of the York League Division Three table ahead of Aviva (who have two games in hand). Also, with Cliffe FC Reserves winning 4-2 away to Selby RSSC Reserves, they also maintain their top spot in the York League Reserve ‘D’ Section.
