York Minster Engineering Football League – Division Two
FT: Stamford Bridge 1 – 1 Cliffe FC
After a deserving defensive performance a stoppage time equaliser denies Cliffe FC victory away to Stamford Bridge.
Hugo Delgado writes…
The game began at a fast pace with both teams looking for an early opening. Stamford Bridge had an opportunity to open scoring when Tom Hogg was adjudged to have passed-back to Cliffe ‘keeper Jamie Hawksworth on the edge of the 6-yard-box. Stamford wasted the opportunity looping the ball over from the indirect free-kick, 0-0. Cliffe were unlucky not to open scoring on the half-hour mark, Hogg’s header inside the box crashing off the bar, 0-0.
Cliffe would go into the half-time interval ahead via a Kevin Taylor cross looped over everyone and straight into the top corner, 0-1 Cliffe.
The second half was more about keeping the 1-0 lead for Cliffe than it was extending the lead and apart from a few half-chances, a massive shout for a penalty turned down when Andy Addison was hacked down in the box, and Chris Jackson finding himself foul of the offside trap, a quality defensive performance developed from Cliffe as Stamford Bridge began to throw men forward. Hawksworth made a great near post save to keep the score 0-1 and it looked as if Cliffe were going to see out the game, unfortunately with their last attack of the match a lucky break lead to Stamford Bridge breaking away down the left wing and grabbing a stoppage time equaliser to make the score 1-1 at the final whistle.
A gutting way to draw for Cliffe after pegging back a Stamford Bridge side that had won all their matches before Saturday’s meeting. Lots of positives to work from for Cliffe FC and again will be looking for all three points next Saturday as they welcome a prepared and motivated Strensall side no doubt to Bowling Green, Selby.
