Upon winning the match, Cliffe FC Manager, Keith Tiplady said;

“A great result in a must win derby. A really heavy (Bowling Green) pitch prevented the game from being a classic, I think I got our tactics spot-on and we could have won by more in the end. What a stunning goal from man-of-the-match Ian Beckram. I’m also very pleased with Cliffe FC players’ attitudes and behaviour in what was a physical encounter.”

From the opening whistle both sides set out to play different style, visitors Thorpe playing in a combative and physical style and Cliffe FC staying true to their footballing style. With the heavy condition of the Bowling Green pitch Cliffe’s set-pieces and final ball were falling short of the mark through-out the first half. It was no surprise that Ian Beckram found himself on the end of multiple robust challenges as he became the biggest thorn in the Thorpe side. Thorpe did have the ball in the net but was ruled offside and the score remained goalless at the interval.

Whilst the pitch took its toll on the quality of football the pace of the game failed to let up and, whilst neither ‘keeper was truly tested until the hour mark, the game was end-to-end. Kev Taylor headed wide from a Luke Crowther early in the half as Thorpe’s #1 found himself busier and busier as the second half developed and had to make a vital save, clawing the ball off out of the path of Chris Jackson as Tom Hogg played him through on goal. Cliffe’s #1, Jamie Hawksworth, remained a virtual spectator apart from having to deal with a few bread and butter crosses and sweeping up Thorpe’s through-balls. A few more vital blocks from Thorpe’s defence kept Cliffe out until the 75 minute mark; Beckram cutting in from the left, skipping at-least two challenges, then placing his shot straight into the top corner from all of at least 25 yards to put Cliffe FC into a 1-0 lead, great goal. Cliffe soon raced into a 2-0 lead 60 seconds later when Paul Tanton was barged down in the area, Luke Crowther stepped-up and smashed the ball past the ‘keeper. Thorpe managed a injury-time consolation goal with their last attack of the game, FT Cliffe FC 2 – 1 Thorpe United.
Unpleasant scenes after the final whistle saw Thorpe’s #6 red-carded for violent conduct after lashing out at two Cliffe FC players.
