With Cliffe FC first team’s County Cup fixture postponed in the morning all eyes were on David Hebson’s Reserves. Sim Leach came closest in the first half to opening scoring with a set of chances, two being saved and other narrowly wide. Civil Service had the ball in the net only to be ruled offside as both teams went in at the break at 0-0.

Civil Service, who had won all 4 of their previous league games this season, opened scoring with the first effort of the second period which will be chalked down as an OG ending up in the net via Ally Harris’ foot, 0-1. Cliffe equalised when a Chris Harkin run and shot ricocheted off defender and post for Tom Ellwood to place the ball into the net, 1-1. Cliffe switched personnel and formation to chase a winner as they began to pressure the Civil Service defence. A long throw from Nathan Parker found it’s way to the back post for Joe White to head Cliffe into a 2-1 lead with six minutes to go. Cliffe tried to shut up shop instead of chasing a third and Civil Service had an equaliser with their next attack, Sim Leach converting a header at the wrong end, OG, 2-2. Then Civil Service nabbed a third at close range, 3-2, before sealing a win with another effort in the dying moments, 4-2 FT. The defeat was compounded with the injury to club captain, Chris Harkin, who suffered ankle ligament damage after a hefty challenge from behind. Once again, many thanks to Eggborough Sports and Social Complex for use of their facilities. …David Hebson quote to follow…
