York Minster Engineering Football League – Reserve ‘C’ Section
FT: Cliffe FC Reserves 5 – 1 Tadcaster Magnets Reserves
A great start to 2012 for Cliffe FC Reserves as they thrash previously unbeaten Tadcaster Magnets Reserves side 5-1 to move off the foot of the York Football League Reserve ‘C’ Section.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
(With no scheduled 1stXI fixture, all eyes were on Cliffe FC Reserves)
The strong swirling wind made for difficult playing conditions on the Barlby High pitch for both sides as the first half played out goal-less. Magnets blasting their best chance over the bar from close range and Aaron Lees failing to connect properly with a shot after doing all the hard work, 0-0 HT.
Gary Wilson performed his half-time team talk and sent his team back out for the second half. Cliffe opened scoring close to the hour mark when a Luke Crowther corner was met by the head of Adam Durnin who powered the ball into the net, 1-0. An almost identical goal doubled Cliffe’s lead as another Crowther corner was headed in by Durnin less than 10 minutes later, 2-0.
Crowther made it 3-0 from the penalty spot when Kev Taylor was dragged down in the area. Magnets hit back with the next attack and put the ball in the net from close range for 3-1. The last 20 minutes was all about the two Cliffe FC debutantes, Chris Harkin and James Grundy, as they linked up on numerous occasions leading to Grundy scoring the goal of the game, a neatly finished effort from 20 yards, 4-1. Harkin completed the rout as he was put through one-on-one to stab the ball past the ‘keeper to make it 5-1 at full-time.
A vital win for Cliffe FC Reserves side, against a Tadcaster Magnets side who haven’t lost in the league since 12th February 2011, to lift them off the bottom of the Reserve ‘C’ table and move to only 2 points behind 8th placed Rowntrees FC outside the relegation zone. The challenge doesn’t let up next Saturday for Cliffe FC Reserves as they travel to face table-toppers Fulford FC Reserves. Cliffe FC 1stXI begin 2012 next Saturday as they welcome Crayke to the Bowling Green.
