East Riding County FA Qualifying Cup – Round Two
FT: Fulford Reserves 3 – 1 Cliffe FC
A lacking display sees Cliffe FC dumped out of the East Riding County Cup by Fulford Reserves.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
“Credit to our hosts as they deserved the win. We aren’t the first team to lose a game like this and we won’t be the last. Injuries and other commitments robbed us of some key players and it showed. Write it off, shrug it off and move on.”
~ Keith Tiplady, 11th November 2012
Cliffe took the lead on the 15 minute mark, a Nathan Parker near-post corner converted by Wes Pears’ clever use of his chest, 1-0. Cliffe failed to really get going at all as Fulford looked the more likely to score the next goal and they did so near the half hour mark, equalising in off-the-post for 1-1 at the break.
Fulford kept up their effort during the second interval and took the lead after breaking down the left wing and the ball looping into the net, 2-1. Cliffe switched to three up top to try and make a game of it, but Fulford made it 3-1 with 15 or so minutes left in the tie and make the task even more difficult for the visitors. Cliffe came close with a Lee Carter freekick and a Tom Hogg shot tipped over the bar but it wasn’t enough as Fulford saw out the win and completed the cup upset to go through to the next round, 3-1 FT. A woeful result in a cup competition that has seen Cliffe eliminated from two years running after a poor performance in a tie that Cliffe should have produced a far better performance.
Both Cliffe FC sides return to league action next Saturday, as the First Team travel to Strensall – a Division Two fixture that produced 12 goals last season – and Reserves travel to Bishop Wilton in Reserve ‘D’ section.
Cliffe FC Squad:

Cliffe FC Goal: Wes Pears.
