York Minster Engineering Football League – Division Two
FT: Rawcliffe 2 – 5 Cliffe FC
Cliffe FC stage a dominant away performance to defeat Rawcliffe 5-goals-to-2 to go into 3rd place in the York League Division Two table.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
After the win, Keith Tiplady said:
“Much better performance today, but still have so much more to come. We were unlucky and at times wasteful in front of goal, still and encouraging display. If we had scored 15 today, it wouldn’t have been unfair. The remaining games need more of the same quality of performance.”
Cliffe took an early lead when a corner found its way onto Andy Addison’s right foot, who struck the ball through a crowd of players to make it 1-nil to the away side. Cliffe doubled their lead when Dave Reasbeck scored his first goal for the club, crisply hammering the ball past the keeper.
Addison made it 0-3 on the 26th minute, side-footing the ball past the ‘keeper after the ball skipped up at an awkward height from another set-piece. Rawcliffe hit back immediately and made it 1-3, finishing off a good team move inside the 6-yard-area. The score could have seen Cliffe further ahead with Tom Hogg and Chris Harkin both hitting the woodwork. The score did read 1-4 at half-time via a trademark Luke Crowther piledriving free-kick.
Addison was denied his hat-trick early into the second half, his header cleared off the line and Harkin continued to be frustrated in front of goal, hitting the woodwork twice more. One of Harkin’s efforts was selflessly left by Crowther, but when it hit the foot of the post, Crowther tried in vain to replicate Ronaldo’s backheel only for his effort to also hit the foot of the post!
Cliffe should have increased their lead with a header, Dale Huntington being frustrated at his headers narrowly going wide and a powerful Hogg header shaving past the wrong side of the post. Steven Rowbottom finished off a neatly squared ball from Adam Durnin to make the score 5-1 before Rawcliffe worked a second goal to make the final score 5-2.
Cliffe FC return to cup competition next weekend as both sides begin in their respective League Cups as Cliffe FC welcome F1 Racing FC to the Bowling Green and Cliffe FC Reserves take the short journey to face Selby RSSC Reserves.
