York Minster Engineering Football League – Division Two
FT: Cliffe FC 5 – 2 Rawcliffe
Cliffe FC repeat the scoreline of a fortnight ago, beating Rawcliffe 5-2 in another competent team performance.
Malcolm Bryce writes…
Keith Tiplady, after the 5-2 win, said:
“Despite an early scare we never looked in danger and like our last meeting it could have been a cricket score. Fantastic goal from Luke, and some great displays all-round. Massive game next Saturday, season defining. Must win.”
Luke Crowther opened scoring after 5 minutes, bringing the ball down and half-volleying the ball over the the ‘keeper and into the roof of the net from at least 30 yards, 1-0. After Dave Reasbeck was penalised for hand-ball inside the box, Rawcliffe levelled from the penalty spot, having to retake the spot-kick due to encroachment, 1-1. Rawcliffe raced into the lead within 90 seconds of the equaliser, looping a freekick over everyone including Cliffe ‘keeper Ally Harris in Ronaldinho-2002-esque fashion, 1-2. Cliffe levelled ten minutes before the break, Andy Addison heading the ball over the ‘keeper after a long-throw, 2-2.
A goal-mouth scramble lead to Cliffe re-taking the lead after the referee spotted a handball. Crowther scored the penalty, at the second attempt as once again the referee ordered a retake due to encroachment, to make the score 3-2 at the interval.
Steve Rowbottom extended Cliffe’s lead two minutes into the second half, left-footing the ball neatly into the bottom corner, 4-2. From this point Cliffe began to exert pressure in-search of another goal, but yet again Chris Harkin was left frustrated against Rawcliffe.
Harris had to make a decent save to keep the score at 4-2 after a decent Rawcliffe effort on goal. Reasbeck hit the bar after a sweetly struck shot and a few more half-chances came and went for Tiplady’s side. Rowbottom rounded things off when the ball broke to him inside the area, firing the ball through a crowd and the ‘keeper to make the final score 5-2.
With Cliffe FC’s promotion run-in well and truly begun, they host 2nd-placed Aviva in must win six-pointer next Saturday at The Bowling Green, Selby.
